Close to Me (02/08/2005)
A Valentine's Day Song
Presented publicly for the first time are the lyrics that I wrote to a song in 2005 called “Close to Me”, which was a Valentine’s Day gift for my girlfriend.
We broke up on Valentine’s Day. Not because of the song, but because of many, many other issues we had (though she wasn’t incredibly impressed with the song).
After the split I reworked a couple of lines, added a bleak ending, and intended to re-record it for the EP that I’ve discussed here, but that never happened.
Yes, I have the song. Yes, I listened to it before posting this. Yes, my dinner repeated on me.
Close to Me

by David C. RobersonI’m driving home, engulfed in cold. It’s 8:30 in the morning — I pray this engine holds. The rain falls hard on this tired old car. It’s been a hundred miles, and you seem so far from me. But I can say that you’ve never seemed so close, and this warmth inside, it haunts me like a ghost — ’cause you’re so close... I hold the phone, I hear your tone. It’s 9:30 in the darkness, and we’re both so tired of being alone. The cold burns deep as we try to sleep, so I write another poem to tell you what you mean to me. But I can say that you’ve never seemed so close, and this warmth inside, it haunts me like a ghost — but you’re so close to me. Be mine, Valentine. Be mine, Valentine. Be mine, Valentine. Be mine... Well, I could say that I’ve never felt this close to you. Place your hand in mine — there’s nothing we can’t do. But you’re not close to me.
