Out of Sight
A Haiku About Waste and Object Impermanence
A surprise challenge from my friend Roo Gratz resulted in this haiku, written today, Feb. 12, 2026!
With the first line already written for me, my mind immediately landed on all those poor babies, the weeping, rotting spinach leaves left lingering with nary a thought in some Dave-forsaken crevice in the back of the refrigerator, neglected for no reason other than having been unlucky enough to find themselves obscured by the tea or a particularly palate-pleasing pasta salad. The polypropylene packaging became a body bag as soon as I placed it in my cart.
